Notes for LEOPOLD ZIEROTT: We know for a fact that Leopold David's fathers name was Leopold as it is listed on his death certificate. There was another reference in Ohio County that his mothers name was Mary but we have not come up with any info to show that for a fact his wife's name was Mary. LEOPOLD DAVID2 ZIEROTT (LEOPOLD1) was born January 16, 1827 in Germany, and died February 05, 1903 in Wheeling WV. He married AUGUSTA KESSLER Abt. 1867 in Germany, daughter of WILLIAM KESSLER and MARY SCHULTZ. She was born June 13, 1848 in Germany, and died September 13, 1924 in Wheeling WV. Notes for LEOPOLD DAVID ZIEROTT: They arrived from Bremen aboard the ship Hermine August 12, 1872 arriving in Baltimore MD and destination was Ohio. This same passenger index has the last name spelled Zieroth instead of Zearott or Zeirott. He was 44 years old at the time and his occupation was listed as farmer. Traveling with him was his wife Auguste who was 25 at the time & 2 daughters. We now have a copy of the actual passenger list and it lists the same information and states that they belonged to the country Prussia. According to his death certificate he was 76 years and 20 days old at the time of his death. His occupation was listed as laborer. He named his father as Leopold from Germany. The informant of his death was Gustavus Zierott 4414 Wetzel. His burial date was 2/8/1903 and date of death was 2/5/1903. Was last seen alive 2/4/1903. His death occured at 6:45 pm. This info was found at the Ohio County WV courthouse Vol 11 page 91 Certificate of Death. He is supposed to be buried at Mt. Zion in Wheeling WVA but the cemetery records do not list him. He is listed in the 1877 Wheeling City Directory as Leopold Zealott, laborer, in the 1880-81 directory as Leopold Zierott, laborer, in the 1882-83 Directory as Leopard Zierott, street laborer and in the 1896 and the 1898-99 Directories he is listed as Leopold Zierott, retired. In the 1903-04 directory his wife Mrs. Augusta (wid. of Leopold) Zierott is listed by herself. We have finally found them in the 1880 Census for Wheeling with the last name spelled "Serig" with himself, wife and children Pauline, Leapold, William, Gustave & Augusta. In this census they state they and their parents were born in Prussia (including Paulina). In the 1900 Census the last name is spelled "Zeiroth" and they state they including their parents & Paulina were born in Poland (Ger). Leopold also states that he is naturalized and that they were the parents of 9 children with 8 living, Carolena died on the ship coming over and Mary died Jan. 1900 (census probably ran June 1899 to May 1900) which bring the total of children to 9. In 1900 their daughter Paulina & her family are living next door to them on Wetzel Street. We found and copied his obitutary where it states he was one of the best known German-American residents of the South Side and was held in highest respect by all who knew him and was survived by his wife and 4 grown children. Drove to 4500 Wetzel 6/7/97, this house no longer exists as it once was. * Drew Seabright, 304-242-6307 / I called a Drew Seabright, who has a location of all burials at Mount Zion. She was buried the 15th of 1924 at Lot 542 with her is buried William Zearott, buried Feb 2nd, 1929. The graves are not marked. She is listed on the passenger index from Bremen to destination OH aboard the ship Hermine arriving August 12, 1872. She was 25 years old and traveling with her husband & 2 daughters. Her name appears in the 1903-04 Wheeling City Directory as Mrs. Augusta Zierott (Wid. of Leopold) living at 4414 Wetzel. Her children Augusta, Gustav, Louis and Wm. were all living with her at this time. We found her obitutary and her funeral service was at her daughter Mrs. Charles Bridgeman's home. Notes for CAROLINA ZIEROTT: She is listed on the passenger index from Bremen to US as Carolena Zieroth. aboard the ship Hermine to destination OH arriving August 12, 1872. She was .11 (11 months old) which would make her approx date of birth 1871. She supposedly died at sea (measles?) and was "buried" at sea. We now have a copy of that passenger list and her date of death was August 5, 1872--7 days before they landed in Baltimore--and her cause of death is shown as measles. There are several other infant passengers on the 2 page list we have that also died of measles. We have come up with her birth month from the list as the date they started their journey was March, 1872 and at that time she was 11 months old making her approx. 1 yr 4 mos old when she died. Notes for WILHELM ZEIROTT: The death records from Marshall County WV show his name as being William Zeirott dying at Glendale Hospital. He was 53 years old at the time of his death, single and a laborer. He is buried in plot #542 with his mother and his burial date was February 2, 1929. It is said he died from injuries due to a work accident. The write up in the newspaper states he was living at 4500 Wetzel and died at 10:15pm in the Glendale Hospital of injuries received in an unusual accident in the yard of the Wheeling Steel Corp. plant at Benwood. He fell in a hole at 2:00 pm in the plant and struck his head on a brick. He was unconscious when reached by fellow workmen. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and had a fracture of the skull. The coroner, Dr. D. B. Ealy of Marshall County, ruled the death accidental after the autopsy and death was due to fracture of the skull and hemorrhage of the brain. He was not married. The funeral services were held at his sister's home, Mrs. Moses Bell. In the 1896 Wheeling City Directory he is listed as Wilhelm Zierott, he was a coalminer and boarding at 4345 McCulloch living with his father who is now retired, his sister Augusta and brother Gustavus. In the 1898-99 Directory he is still listed as Wilhelm Zierott as a helper and boarding at 4414 Wetzel along with his father, sister Augusta and 2 brothers Gustavus & Leopold. In the 1903-04 Directory he is now listed as Wm. Zierott (their abbreviation for Wilhem?) as a stonemason appr. boarding at 4414 Wetzel along with his mother who is now a widow, sister Augusta and brothers Gustav & Louis. It is doubtful that there is a headstone. It is supposed to be a "pauper's" cemetery. Informant of Death - Herman Zeirott. His residence at the time of his death was 4328 McColloch St., Wheeling. The house still stands today (6/7/97). Spoke with a Mr. and Mrs. John D. Shemon who lived across the street and they knew Louis. They live at 4334 McColloch St. and have lived there since 1957. They say Louie never married (actually he did twice and ) and always kept to himself. He lived in the basement part of the house, always had a real nice garden and drove nice cars. They gave us a name Ruth Robbins, 4322 Jacob St. 232-2967 to stop & see or call. Her brother Rudy bought Lewis' house after he died. It is his death certificate that has the last name spelled as Zeirott. While researching info in Ohio County WV, we came up with Louis being married twice. We find no info regarding any children from either marriage. While there is a marriage license for Louis & Sarah, we could not find one with Luvada. We did however find them listed living together in the 1932-1932 Wheeling City Directories at 4328 McCulloch address. Her name is spelled there Levada. Her death record has the name spelled as Luvada and the last name is still spelled Zeirott. We found her obitutary and she was married prior to Louis to a "Williams" and had 4 sons and 2 daughters by her first marriage. We have found her grave at Greenwood and she is buried by herself. She died at Peterson Place-possibly a nursing home and her obit also states she was the widow of Louis Zeirott. Her headstone uses the name Zeirott. PAULINA3 ZIEROTT (LEOPOLD DAVID2, LEOPOLD1) was born February 10, 1868 in Germany, and died April 26, 1938 in Wheeling WV. She married MOSES BELL August 09, 1888 in Wheeling WV. He was born August 1855 in WV, and died 1935 in Wheeling WV. Notes for PAULINA ZIEROTT: She was 21 years old when she married Moses Bell. We have a copy of the original permission slip signed by her father for her to "inter marry" with Moses Bell. She is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wheeling along with her husband and sons William & Clyde. She is listed on the passenger index to the US as Pauline Zieroth, female, 3 years old on the ship Hermine from Bremen to OH arriving August 12, 1872. On April 10, 1998, we visited Leona & Leola Bell. Paulina was their grandmother. They state that Paulina worked in the Bell household, that was how she met Moses. They also stated that her suicide took place 1 year after the date her son Clyde was buried. Apparently she was quite close to him and even built him a home on her property after her husband Moses died. They say she went out on a hill, near a spring and drank the Lysol. Her body was not found until the next day. Her obitutary just states that her body was removed by the Bieswenger funeral service to the Bertschy Memorial mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements. According to Clara Hofmann he laid his suit out on the bed (his funeral clothes) and then went out hunting, or so his mother thought, and she heard shots and when he didn't come in he was found dead. His death certificate and obitutary that was printed has his name spelled as Zearott as does his marriage license. He was 26 years old when he married Ruby. In the 1896 Wheeling City Directory he is listed with his last name spelled Zierott, occupation is helper (Miller Bros & Co.) boarding at 4345 McCulloch which is the same address as his father, sister Augusta and brother Wilhelm. In the 1898-99 Directory he is listed as Zierott, laborer, bds at 4414 Wetzel & living still with his father, sister Augusta and now 2 brothers Wilhelm and Leopold. In the 1903-04 Directory he is still using Zierott is now a blacksmith helper boarding at 4414 Wetzel still along with now his mother who is a widow, sister Augusta, and brothers Louis and Wm (Wilhelm). He was employed by the Riverside Mill at Benwood when they married.
